Your Smart TV’s Off Switch Is More Complicated Than It Looks
A modern TV is less like an appliance and more like a computer permanently stationed in your living room. It has microphones, an operating system, and an internet connection. Turning off the screen does not necessarily turn off everything behind it.
“Off” Usually Means Standby
Press the power button and the panel goes dark. The speakers fall silent. Most people reasonably assume the television is now off.
In practice, many smart TVs remain partially awake. Fast startup, voice activation, casting, and mobile-app controls all require certain components to keep running. Depending on the model and its settings, that can include the network connection and parts of the voice-control system.
Think of it as closing a laptop lid rather than shutting the machine down. The TV may look inactive while it waits for the next command.
That gap between what consumers understand as “off” and what manufacturers design as standby sits at the heart of the LG smart TV audio controversy. It is also why a black screen should never be treated as proof that a connected device is dormant.
Listening Is Not the Same as Uploading
Precision matters here. An active microphone does not automatically mean that every living-room conversation is being recorded and sent to a corporate server.
Voice control typically involves several separate steps:
- The microphone captures ambient sound.
- The device checks locally for a wake word.
- Speech after the wake word is interpreted as a command.
- Some audio or processing records may be stored remotely.
The first two steps can happen entirely on the television. Cloud-based voice recognition, however, may send part of a recording to an external server. From a privacy perspective, those are radically different architectures.
“Audio logs” can also mean more than saved recordings. A log might contain timestamps, device identifiers, opened apps, or transcribed commands. Each detail looks harmless in isolation. Together, they can map when a household wakes up, what it watches, and when nobody appears to be home.
Still, suspicion is not evidence. In the latest 30-day period, there were zero corroborating public posts establishing that a specific LG model continuously recorded or transmitted conversations while its screen was off. That does not settle every technical question, but it does mean claims of constant secret recording remain unproven.
The More Plausible Threat May Already Be on Your Wi-Fi
Smart-home security stories usually begin with an outside hacker. The messier risk is often a device that already has access to the home network.
TVs, phones, speakers, cameras, and robot vacuums use discovery protocols such as mDNS and SSDP to find one another. In plain English, devices regularly announce their presence: “I’m a TV,” “I’m a speaker,” “Here is how to reach me.”
That convenience creates an internal trust problem. An abandoned security camera or bargain-bin smart plug may stop receiving updates long before the television does. If attackers compromise that weaker device, they can use it as a foothold to inspect or attack other hardware on the same network.
This is effectively an insider threat for the smart home. Nobody needs to break through the front door if they can hijack something the router already trusts.
A smart TV is an attractive target. It has a microphone, a network connection, and predictable daily use. It also sits in the room where household routines are easiest to observe. Better yet for an attacker, people rarely suspect a device whose screen is dark.
Four Settings Worth Checking Today
Start with voice recognition and hands-free wake features. Disable them if you never use them. Some models treat the microphone in the remote and the far-field microphone built into the television as separate settings, so check both.
Next, review privacy permissions individually. Personalized advertising, viewing-data collection, and voice-data sharing may be covered by different consent switches. If setup involved clicking “accept all” to make the prompts disappear, it is worth taking a second pass.
Then check software support. Smart TVs run full operating systems, which means security patches matter. Enable automatic updates. If an older model no longer receives fixes, consider limiting its internet access or using an external streaming device that still gets updates.
Finally, look at the router. Put TVs and other IoT hardware on a guest or isolated network, separate from work laptops and personal computers. Change the router’s default administrator password while you are there.
The useful question is bigger than whether one LG television secretly listened to someone. We have become too comfortable treating a dark screen as a security boundary. In a connected home, “off” is a claim worth verifying.
