It’s 11 p.m. You opened an app to check one thing, and now you’ve been scrolling for an hour. If your first instinct was to blame your own weak willpower, stop. This is not a personal failing. It’s the designed outcome of a system built to produce exactly this result.

There’s a phrase circulating among tech critics lately: dopamine fracking. It’s borrowed from hydraulic fracturing, the technique used to blast shale gas out of deep rock. Just as fracking forces out the last trapped drop of energy under high pressure, tech companies are drilling your brain’s reward circuitry down to the bottom of the well.

Addiction Isn’t a Bug. It’s the Feature.

Start with the uncomfortable truth: that “just one more” impulse you feel inside an app is not an accidental side effect. It’s the core product.

Silicon Valley has an open secret of a job title: the attention engineer. Behavioral psychologists, neuroscientists, and data scientists work as one team toward a single goal. Keep the user on screen for one more second.

Their toolkit was field-tested in casinos. The classic example is the slot machine’s principle of variable reward. The uncertainty of whether the next pull is a jackpot or a bust is exactly what makes dopamine spike. When you pull down to refresh your feed, you are, neurologically speaking, yanking a slot machine lever.

Tristan Harris, the former Google design ethicist, called this “the enslavement of a billion minds.” It sounds like hyperbole until you understand the design intent. Then it just sounds accurate.

Why “Fracking” Is the Right Word

There’s a reason critics reach for “fracking” instead of plain old “addiction.”

Fracking is, at its core, a technology for extracting a depleted resource more deeply and more violently. The easy oil is already gone. So you pump chemical-laced water at high pressure into deeper rock and shatter it. The environmental bill comes later.

The attention economy is at exactly that stage. The “easy attention” has all been mined. The day is still 24 hours long, and Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and games are at war over those same hours. You can’t manufacture new attention, so only one option remains: squeeze the people you already have, harder and deeper.

This is why short-form video keeps getting shorter, why notifications keep getting craftier, and why autoplay keeps getting harder to interrupt. When the surface deposits run dry, the drilling turns aggressive.

Who Gets Drilled the Hardest

There’s a second uncomfortable truth buried in this operation: not everyone gets extracted equally.

Teenagers, whose self-regulation isn’t fully developed, and people who are simply more vulnerable to dopamine rewards get drilled the deepest. The algorithm knows precisely who lingers longer and acts more impulsively. It then prioritizes more stimulating content for exactly those users. It digs hardest where the rock is softest.

The key concept here is information asymmetry. On one side sit hundreds of brain scientists and billions of behavioral data points. On the other sits an ordinary person who just wants to unwind after work. This is not a fair fight. Telling someone to win on willpower is like telling them to walk into a casino and beat the house.

So What Can We Actually Do

This isn’t meant to be pure doom. There are signs the current is shifting.

The European Union, through its Digital Services Act (DSA), has begun treating “addictive design” itself as a regulatory target. Pressure is mounting to strip infinite scroll and autoplay out of default settings. Several U.S. states are debating bills to limit algorithmic feeds aimed at minors. The recognition is taking hold that addiction is not a problem of individual self-control but a problem of design and regulation.

There’s also plenty you can do at the individual level. The key is restoring friction — the very inconvenience companies have worked so hard to erase. Turning off notifications, pulling apps off your home screen, switching your display to grayscale: these small moves measurably dull the stimulation of your dopamine circuits. It seems trivial, but it’s like narrowing the mouth of the drill hole.

You can’t stop scrolling not because you’re weak, but because the best minds in the world have spent years making sure you can’t. Just knowing this changes the rules of the game.
