This isn’t someone being “too online.” In psychological terms, it’s attachment formation — directed at something that will never truly attach back.

Why Teenagers Are Uniquely Vulnerable

The prefrontal cortex — the brain region responsible for impulse control, long-term judgment, and evaluating whether a relationship is healthy — doesn’t fully mature until your mid-twenties. Teenagers are, by definition, working with incomplete hardware for exactly the decisions these apps demand.

Layer on the loneliness and identity-seeking that define adolescence, and AI chatbots become almost irresistible. Real relationships are uncertain. People can reject you. An AI companion is engineered to be on your side, always.

The Industry Response Is Not Enough

But age verification still relies on self-reporting. A 13-year-old claiming to be 18 faces no meaningful barrier. The workarounds are trivial.

The deeper problem is structural. These companies’ business models run on emotional engagement. The more attached a user becomes, the more likely they are to convert to a paid subscription. Asking these platforms to reduce emotional dependency is asking them to shrink their revenue. The incentives point in exactly the wrong direction — a version of the same conflict that plagued social media companies for a decade before regulators caught up.

The Question We Keep Avoiding
